This grasshopper became a totem animal for me in 2021, an image of summer, freedom, and new identity arising from the acknowledgment that we are not all ants, that we cannot save ourselves by stockpiling resources. Grasshoppers actually die in the winter. Their job is to sing through the summer. It is a rebuke to Aesop's fable of the ant and the grasshopper and an embrace of Mary Oliver's poem, The Summer Day. "Tell me, what is it you plan to do/ with your one wild and precious life."
